Halloween Driving Hazards

Halloween Driving SafetyHalloween is a holiday to celebrate the spooky side of life as witches, goblins and ghosts emerge to enjoy tricks and treats – particularly in the early evening hours. But be aware that distracted children and adult partygoers might not pay attention to traffic. If you’re driving, you’ll want to heed the following Halloween safe driving tips to avoid accidents that can spoil your fun and leave you with an auto insurance claim.

  • Remember that Halloween might be celebrated on days other than October 31st. So use caution when driving in weekend traffic before or after Halloween.
  • If you are driving to a costume party, be sure that your costume does not obscure your vision. Opt for makeup instead of a mask, or delay adding any head gear or masks until you have arrived and parked your vehicle.
  • Since trick-or-treating tends to be in residential areas, use major routes and highways to reach your destination instead.
  • If you must use residential roads, try to avoid peak trick-or-treat hours of 6-9 P.M. when traffic will be most congested in those areas.
  • This is not a time to hurry. Allow ample time for your trip and perhaps even drive below the posted speed limit to avoid excited children that could dart into your car’s path, unexpectedly.
  • If you are stopping to pick up or drop off partygoers and trick-or-treaters, be sure to use your hazard lights to let other drivers know what you are doing. In fact, check all your vehicle’s lights ahead of time to be sure they will work to make you visible to the traffic around you.
  • Remember that parked cars obstruct your view, so don’t rely on sight alone. Eliminate noise inside your car and perhaps open a window to listen to the voices and activity around you.
  • Even after the peak trick-or-treat hours of early evening, watch for drivers who are erratic or speeding. Remember that adult partygoers may be driving home later and could be distracted or impaired.

Auto Insurance Tip

If you will be driving other trick-or-treaters or partygoers this Halloween season, be sure that you are fully protected with property, liability and medical coverage on your auto insurance policy. Check with your insurance agent to confirm that your coverage is in place is well before you need it.
